What is new

A PLOS ONE study published on 22 September analyses the first intact burials documented at Göbekli Tepe. These were excavated in earlier years; the new event is their analysis. The researchers compare their preservation and damage with fragmented remains elsewhere at the site. [1]

A less dramatic possibility

The study supports erosion and redeposition from burials as a plausible source of some fragments. Göbekli Tepe's monumental buildings remain extraordinary, as UNESCO's site account explains, but remarkable architecture does not determine the explanation for every bone. [1, 2]

What to keep in mind

The study does not explain every fragment or rule out all intentional treatment of remains. Its burial evidence and broader interpretation deserve separate confidence levels.
