What researchers found

A 9 September Chandra announcement and Nature Astronomy paper describe a population of hypersoft sources: objects detected mainly at unusually low X-ray energies. The team identified 84 candidates across six galaxies. Much of their inferred output may emerge in extreme ultraviolet light, which intervening gas readily absorbs. [1, 2]

What remains open

The researchers propose several kinds of accreting stellar systems, potentially involving white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes. These are candidate explanations, not a single established identity for every source. [1, 2]

What to keep in mind

The observed low-energy sources are supported by the data. Their individual identities, total energy output and possible supernova connections remain uncertain.
