A bright point races across a video. Someone calls it impossible. Someone else calls it a balloon. Both may be moving too quickly—from an observation to an explanation.

What did the camera actually record?

A video records a view from a particular instrument and position. To translate movement across the frame into an object's physical speed, we need context such as distance and camera motion. A dramatic-looking clip may leave those quantities uncertain.

Consider a hypothetical light filmed from a moving vehicle. Its position relative to the background changes. Is the light moving, is the observer moving, or are both? Without the missing information, more than one explanation can fit the same visual impression.

Unknown is a description of the evidence

NASA's UAP work emphasises the shortage of high-quality observations and the importance of systematic data collection. Its 2023 independent study addressed how to study UAP scientifically; it was not an investigation that resolved every historical incident. NASA's FAQ does not identify UAP observations as evidence of alien technology. [1]

This leaves room for serious curiosity. An unresolved case is not necessarily trivial, and a sincere observer may have seen something they cannot explain. But sincerity alone cannot supply the measurements needed to identify the cause.

Four questions before the conclusion

Ask what instrument was used, whether the original recording is available, whether distance is known and whether there are independent observations. Then separate the reported experience from any later interpretation.

A useful investigation should state what would distinguish its competing explanations. Independent verification is also central to SETI's principles for assessing possible evidence of extraterrestrial technology. Repeating a claim is different from independently testing it. [2]

Sometimes the honest answer remains unresolved. That is a meaningful outcome when the available evidence cannot discriminate among alternatives. Keeping the label open preserves the question for better data.

What to keep in mind

The vehicle example is hypothetical and does not explain any particular UAP incident. A case must be evaluated using its own evidence. An evidence gap establishes neither an extraordinary explanation nor a mundane one.
