What the trial found

NIH highlighted the findings on 29 September; the trial paper appeared on 31 August. In 959 participants, 15- or 25-day courses of nirmatrelvir–ritonavir showed no significant benefit over the ritonavir-plus-placebo control on the main long COVID outcomes studied. These covered cognitive, autonomic and exercise-related symptoms. [1, 2]

What changes

The result narrows expectations for these regimens in these patient groups. It also illustrates why improvement within a treatment group is insufficient: the comparison group matters.

What to keep in mind

This trial does not settle every cause of long COVID, rule out every antiviral strategy or overturn evidence for treatment of acute COVID-19. It is not individual medical advice.
